10 Tips to Get Started with Yoga

  1. A flexible body is not required but an open mind is a must. Be open to move and breathe in a different way.
  2. Start with a Beginner's Yoga class. The pace is typically slower as the instructor will give more cues and a detailed description of poses.
  3. Consistency is key so find class times and yoga studio that is convenient to your schedule, job and/or home.
  4. There's no such thing as yoga "cheating" so try more than one teacher or studio. We've heard many folks say "I tried yoga once but I wasn't feeling the teacher or the yoga studio or (fill in the blank)". If your first class wasn't a great experience, find another class to take and see what teacher, studio or class resonates with you.
  5. Wear comfortable clothing. Note you'll want to stay away from loose fitting clothing that will shift during yoga poses and transitions.
  6. Avoid wearing cologne and/or perfumes.
  7. Try to eat no later than 2 hours before your yoga class. You want to avoid practicing on a full stomach to prevent discomfort.
  8. Bring water but drink sparingly during class and stay well hydrated after class.
  9. You will need a yoga mat to practice but most yoga studios offer mats that you can borrow or rent for class.
  10. Take breaks as needed during class. Yoga is not a competition so listen to your body.
