What:  Qigong (pronounced chee-gong) is a form of energy cultivation (qi =energy and gong = practice/skill) that utilizes the breath, movement and intention through visualization to harmonize the flow of energy in the body. It brings the mind, body and spirit into alignment. Qigong is the oldest branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

Through deep breathing and meditative, intentional movement, qigong can reverse many ailments and helps to reduce the suffering caused by mental anguish and physical pain by allowing the qi to flow harmoniously throughout the body.   These practices are based upon the Five Element Theory in Chinese Medicine, which suggests we all have innate qualities such as integrity, unconditional love, kindness, trust and wisdom.  A regular qigong practice can help to bring us in alignment with these innate qualities and increase our overall vitality and wellbeing.

Qigong Classes:

Qigong classes consist of qigong exercises that are usually followed by a short meditation. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and shoes, since classes are usually conducted in a standing position (students can be seated in a chair if need be).  The exercises will include slow gentle movements along with conscious breathing and focused intention to get energy moving throughout the body. The exercises will be taught ‘flow’ style which we will build upon each week.  By the end of the series participants will be familiar with the Daoist 5 Qigong movements.

About Mara:

Born in Georgia, to an Italian mother and an American father,  I’ve always been interested in various cultures and traditions. My curiosity has taken me abroad working as a language teacher in Italy,  Spain,  England and Japan. I’ve also traveled extensively throughout Europe and Latin America. After having gained valuable experience living abroad, I’ve cultivated insight and a growing interest in both Western and Eastern medicine, which led to exploring Chinese Medicine and Qigong.

My journey began with a deep interest in meditation and with the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism, and Taoism.  Shortly afterwards, while continuing to nurture my spiritual awareness, I also developed a passion for organic food cultivation while working on a farm in Italy. This grew into a deep area of interest as I began studying diet, nutrition and organic gardening.

I’m a certified Medical Qi Gong Practioner, Reiki I Practioner, in addition to having two Bachelor of Arts degrees in Spanish and Italian from the University of Georgia.  I have also completed the 8 week Compassion Based Meditation Training (CBCT) at Emory University with Geshe Lobsang Tenzin Negi as well as studied mindfulness practices with many others. I have given qigong workshops all throughout Italy, and I have also taught mindfulness to locals in the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Mexico.

Today, I professionally strive to help my clients cultivate a mindfulness practice, employing a combination of Eastern and Western medicinal techniques with a strong focus on diet, nutrition and meditation.
